In this video, we will introduce you to the superb spring cherry blossom views of Shimabara Castle and Hirado Castle in Nagasaki Prefecture! ■Shimabara Castle ( 100 Great Castles of Japan ) Shimabara Castle is located on the Shimabara Peninsula in southeastern Nagasaki Prefecture and is one of the “100 Great Castles of Japan”. Shimabara Castle was built by Shigemasa Matsukura in 1624 during the early Edo period, with a five-story castle tower at its core and small and large turrets and gates at key locations. It was a magnificent castle built in the Azuchi-Momoyama period construction style, but the construction was said to have been difficult due to the volcanic ash and lava flow ground from Mt. Unzen. The oppressive rule of Shigemasa and Katsuie, the second lord of the domain, led to the “Shimabara Rebellion,” and Katsuie was held responsible and beheaded, and the Matsukura clan was reexecuted. After the Matsukura clan was exiled, the castle was replaced by four different families of feudal lords. After the Meiji Restoration, the castle was abandoned and the castle tower and other structures were torn down, but between 1960 and 1980, the castle tower and turrets were restored, and the castle is now a historical museum related to Christianity and the feudal era. ■Hirado Castle ( 100 Great Castles of Japan ) Hirado Castle was located on Hirado Island in the northwestern part of Nagasaki Prefecture and is one of the “100 Great Castles of Japan”. Surrounded on three sides by the sea in the northeastern part of Hirado Island, the castle was a sea castle with a natural moat, located on a hill overlooking Hirado Port and the Kyushu mainland on the opposite shore. Once destroyed in the early Edo period (1603-1867), Hirato was a domain without a castle, but it was rebuilt and improved in 1703 by the fourth lord of the domain, Shigenobu Matsuura. After the Meiji Restoration, the castle was abandoned and the buildings were removed, but in 1962, the castle tower, Kenso Yagura, Inui yagura, Jizozaka Yagura, and Kaiju Yagura were rebuilt. Kaijyu-Yagura was built to protect the eastern side of Ninomaru, overlooking Shirahama Harbor, and is now used as a lodging facility called “Shiro-haku” where visitors can stay overnight. If you stay here, you will have the sea of Hirado all to yourself in private! In addition, the Inui Yagura (Inui Yagura) turret protected the Ninomaru Goten (Palace) when Hirado Castle was rebuilt. It is now operated as a French restaurant open only on Saturdays and Sundays. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Video Content and Time Index 00:00 Shimabara Castle 05:29 Hirado Castle -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The most spectacular cherry blossom spots in Japan!
