AC traction had a difficult start in the locomotive industry in North America and it wasn't until 1993 that EMD introduced the first AC model in their SD series, the SD70MAC. At the time, it directly competed with GE's Dash 9 series, equipped with DC traction motors on their axles, and soon with GE's first AC model: the AC4400CW. Both AC pioneers have been so successful that they have recently been rebuilt and modernized (SD70MACe vs AC4400CWM), extending their lifetimes for many years to come. In contrast to the GE rebuilds, their EMD cousins are rather rare catches, though. It was therefore a great surprise to see two of them leading X280, an off-schedule version of M280 (mostly autoracks with a bit of general cargo added). We chase this train from Howie Siding in Comer, GA to Harper Siding between Statham, GA and Winder, GA, where it has to wait for northbound M583 (also in the video). The other trains are a northbound rerouted loaded coal train, C758, at the chicken house in Colbert, GA and a southbound military train, S853 with a UP leader. The latter was a night catch on the next day at the depot in Colbert. Enjoy! Correction: UP 7156 should read UP 7756 (GE ES44AC-H).
