These ridges were part of the larger defensive network often called “Bloody Nose Ridge.” Each “sister” was a jagged limestone height honeycombed with caves, firing ports, and mutually supporting positions. From these elevations, Japanese defenders could observe and fire down into the draws and approaches below, making every Marine advance exposed and costly. Combat around the Five Sisters was slow, brutal, and fought at extremely close range. U.S. Marines—and later soldiers from the 81st Infantry Division—had to seize each ridge individually, using flamethrowers, demolitions, tanks, and direct artillery fire to reduce fortified caves. Even after one crest was taken, defenders often emerged from hidden tunnels behind advancing troops. The struggle for the Five Sisters exemplified the attritional nature of the fight in Peleliu’s coral hills, where terrain and fortification turned small pieces of ground into deadly strongpoints that required days of fighting to secure.
