Gelibolu, sometimes known as Gallipoli, is a town in the Turkish province of Eastern Thrace. It is one of the ferry terminals that cross the Dardanelles Straits on the north or European side. Don't get off the bus here if you're seeking for the Gallipoli landing sites! They are much further south, close to the key Dardanelles ferry ports of Eceabat and Kilitbahir. Gelibolu is named after the Greek word kallipolis, which meaning "beautiful city." The Sea of Marmara narrows into the 60-kilometer-long Dardanelles or Hellespont approximately halfway along the same-named peninsula. As a result, the town controls both the maritime route that connects the Mediterranean with Istanbul and the Black Sea, as well as land trade throughout the peninsula. As a result, it has been strategically important since antiquity.
