Welcome to Perky's Analog Gear Demos. Please subscribe for more demos of vintage & rare effects pedals! This is a Japanese Shin-ei Companion FY-2 Fuzz Box dating from around 1970. As used by Dan Auerbach from the Black Keys, The Jesus & Mary Chain & Radiohead among others, this vintage octafuzz has been cloned many times over the years. The volume famously doesn't reach unity even when up full, so you will get some volume drop with this pedal. The Fuzz control isn't (as you might expect) a gain control, but an EQ...taking us from muffled, synth-like tones through to biting, cutting ones. Having only one level of gain, this pedal is something of a one-trick pony - but it does its 'thing' spectacularly well. You can see why so many people have tried to copy its sound over the years and still love it today! What do you think? A really cool vintage fuzz with a timeless tone? Or not? Comment below! Guitar is a Fender Strat through a Hughes & Kettner Puretone Combo (recorded with an sE Electronics RNR1 Ribbon) and a Cornell Romany Plus (recorded with a 57) [email protected]
