We recorded this 4k ultra hd video during our trip to Riga, Latvia on July 2024. Situated on the Daugava River, Riga is not only Latvia's capital but also the largest city across the three Baltic States: Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. It's home to roughly 600,000 people. Latvia is now proudly part of the European Union and uses the Euro (€) as its currency. It's also a NATO member state. While Latvian is the official language, you'll find English widely understood, particularly in central Riga and among younger people, alongside Russian. The heart of the city, Riga's Historic Centre (Vecrīga), is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This status honours its unique blend of well-preserved medieval structures and the world's finest collection of Art Nouveau architecture. You'll find a fascinating mix of architectural styles, from Gothic and Baroque to the world-renowned Art Nouveau. Historically, Riga was founded in the 12th century and became a prominent member of the Hanseatic League, a powerful medieval trading alliance. This era left an indelible mark on the city's wealth and architectural heritage. Later, Riga was under the rule of Sweden and Russia before achieving independence. The 20th century brought significant challenges, with occupations by both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Latvia regained its independence in 1991, and Riga has since flourished as a proud European capital. Travel Tip: The best time to visit Riga is generally during the warmer months, from late spring to early autumn, when the weather is pleasant for exploring. However, Riga has its own charm in every season. Getting around Riga is easy. The Old Town is very walkable, and the city has an efficient public transportation system including buses, trams, and trolleybuses. Consider purchasing a Riga Card for unlimited travel and discounts on attractions. Riga is considered a safe city for tourists. However, it's always wise to be mindful of your belongings, especially in crowded areas. English is widely spoken, particularly in tourist areas.
