Advent Design developed a specialized precision slicing system for the medical industry to enable the continuous production of ultra-thin biological samples. The machine was designed to produce slices with a thickness of 0.017 inches while maintaining a tight tolerance of ±0.002 inches, ensuring consistent and repeatable yields. In this application, the materials being processed were embedded within a block of ice. Freezing the material within ice provides structural stability during the cutting process, allowing delicate materials to maintain their integrity while being sectioned. The system was designed to operate with a servo-driven indexing mechanism that precisely advanced the frozen block toward the cutting blade at controlled increments. This indexing motion ensured each slice was produced at the required thickness and maintained consistent dimensional accuracy throughout the cutting cycle. As each slice was separated from the block, the cut material automatically fell into a retention basin, where samples could be collected for further processing or analysis. Because the machine was intended for use in a medical environment, the design had to meet stringent sanitation and cleaning requirements. To support these standards, Advent Design constructed the machine primarily from stainless steel materials and implemented hygienic design principles that minimized horizontal surfaces and eliminated areas where liquids could pool.
