EDITH FARNADI plays "Hungarian Rhapsodies No. 1-19" by FRANZ LISZT. Revised and published in the early 1850s, No. 1-15 of the Hungarian Rhapsodies make up what could quite confidently said to be Liszt's best known collection of pieces, even though not every piece is equally famous. These pieces demonstrate Liszt's more mature virtuoso piano writing, while No. 16-19 were written 30 years later in the composer's late style which is considerably less technically difficult and less orchestral in its sound, but still very direct in its rhapsodic approach nonetheless. The use of the Hungarian Gypsy scale (or the Double Harmonic Minor scale) makes these 19 pieces a lot more harmonically interesting than they often get credited for, seeing how they are unfairly mostly remembered as mere showpieces today. Since Liszt grew up around Hungarian National music, it is of no surprise that he wanted to honor and respect this style of music by implementing these folk tunes into his own compositions and thereby created some of the most memorable piano pieces of the 19th century.
