So far we have been talking about many alternative fuels. Now Biodiesel also joins the list. In today's video, we have discussed Biodiesel, its advantages. disadvantages and how it is produced. Biodiesel is manufactured from vegetable oil, animal fats or the used oils from households and restaurants. Did you know, the very first diesel engine used vegetable oil as its fuel. By adding alcohol and a base catalyst to the oil, biodiesel is produced. This process is called transesterification. Various methods adopted for carrying out this process. The various methods are Common Batch Process, Supercritical Process and Ultrasonic Methods. Many manufactures prefer the Common Batch Process over the others. This is because it is economical, the manufacturing process is flexible and it’s easy to start and shut down the production. Biodiesel is meant to be used in standard diesel engines. This is because the characteristics are similar to diesel. Biodiesel can be used alone or as a blend with regular diesel. A system known as the “B-Factor” is used to state the amount of biodiesel in any fuel mixture. There is a list of B-factors like B100, B20, B5, B2, etc. Biodiesel has its own set of advantages. The availability of biodiesel is high and can be easily produced. The sulphur content present is very less in biodiesel and they produce low greenhouse emissions. Biodiesel has better lubrication properties, which reduces the wear and increases engine life. The flashpoint of biodiesel(130oC) is significantly higher than regular diesel(64oC) and gasoline(-45oC). The vehicles running on Biodiesel have 30% better fuel economy when compared to fossil fuels. The drawbacks of Biodiesel are, not all the vegetable oil or the animal fat have a perfect quality. So, the quality of the biodiesel varies accordingly. The cleaned dirt gets collected in the fuel filter and clogs it. During cold conditions, bio diesels have ignition problems. biodiesel tends to absorb little amounts of moisture from the air. So, the moisture content in the biodiesel tends to freeze in cold conditions and affects the ignition properties. The heat liberated during the combustion process is less in biodiesel.
