The Irish scientist Séamus “Shay” Lawless smiles in front of Everest beside his guide Noel Hanna, who at that point had already reached the summit eight times. They raise their hands for a photo, without oxygen masks and without high-altitude suits. It is a moment before the final ascent, still far from the so-called “death zone.” Days later, Shay will reach the summit and send a message to his wife saying he made it and is coming home. A few hours later, he disappears during the descent, just two hundred meters from Camp IV. In this video, we reconstruct his journey from professor at Trinity College Dublin to 8,848 meters on Everest: four years of preparation, climbs of Mera Peak, Island Peak, and Denali, the decision to attempt Everest without a previous eight-thousander, and the events of May 16, 2019. We analyze the stop at the Balcony, the separation from the group, the section of blue ice, the fall after unclipping from the fixed rope, and the search operation that never succeeded in recovering his body.
