Mid of Hu and Yudhoyono shaking hands after press conference STORYLINE China and Indonesia agreed on Monday to boost bilateral trade by more than 50 percent over the next three years to 20 (b) billion US dollars, as the energy-rich archipelago attempts to take advantage of China's booming economy. The announcement came on the first day of Chinese President Hu Jintao's two-day state visit in Indonesia. Hu met Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono for talks before signing a joint declaration on strategic partnership between their two countries. The two countries also signed a number of agreements aimed at improving cooperation on trade, fisheries and other economic sectors. Yudhoyono told reporters he hoped Indonesia's volume of trade with China will rise to 20 (b) billion US dollars over the next three years, which would be an increase of 7 (b) billion US dollars in annual trade between the two countries. Hu called the meeting "a success," adding that the new declaration would "influence positively the relationship between China and Asia." Unlike its Asian neighbours, Indonesia for years has struggled to take advantage of China's robust economy and its insatiable demand for natural resources. Despite having vast oil, natural gas and coal reserves, Indonesia's political instability and corruption woes prompted China to turn to countries like Australia. But with the popular Yudhoyono taking the helm in October, the economy has stabilised and Indonesian officials expect that Chinese investments will soon overtake those from Japan, currently the country's largest foreign investor.
