Upper GI Endoscopy Explained | How It Works & What Doctors See Inside Your Stomach!

#UpperGIEndoscopy #Endoscopy Ever been curious about what happens when your doctors want a closer look at your stomach? That's where Upper GI Endoscopy (EGD - Esophagogastroduodenoscopy) comes in! In this in-depth video, we will outline the procedure, its use, indications, advantages, risks, and FAQs-all in 3 minutes! ⏳ What is an Upper GI Endoscopy? An Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Endoscopy, or EGD (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy), is a less invasive test that is used to look at the esophagus, stomach, and the first portion of the small intestine (duodenum). A thin, flexible tube with a small camera and light (an endoscope) is passed through the mouth, and doctors can look inside your digestive tract in real-time. The test is most often used for diagnosing, monitoring, and even treating many gastrointestinal disorders. Indications: When Do You Need an Upper GI Endoscopy? Your physician may order an Upper GI Endoscopy if you have any of the following symptoms: 1. Chronic Heartburn or Acid Reflux (GERD) To screen for damage to the esophagus due to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) To identify Barrett's esophagus, a precancerous state 2. Unexplained Weight Loss or Anemia To screen for occult ulcers, internal bleeding, tumors, or malabsorption 3. Difficulty Swallowing (Dysphagia) To assess strictures, esophageal rings, obstructions, or even early esophageal cancer 4. Persistent Upper Abdominal Pain, Nausea, or Vomiting To treat conditions such as gastritis, ulcers, gallbladder disease, or H. pylori infection 5. GI Bleeding (Vomiting Blood or Black, Tarry Stools) To detect and treat bleeding ulcers, varices, or tumors 6. Monitoring and Treatment Used to remove polyps, stop bleeding, or to take biopsies What to Expect During the Upper GI Endoscopy? The procedure is typically 15–30 minutes long You might be given a mild sedative for your comfort The endoscope is slipped into the mouth and guided into the stomach If necessary, a biopsy may be taken or abnormal growths treated Risks & Complications Even though Upper GI Endoscopy is normal and safe, some uncommon dangers are: Sore throat (transient) Mild cramping or bloating Bleeding (if a procedure or treatment is done) Small chance of perforation (liner tear) The majority of patients recover quite fast and can lead normal lives after a few hours. Upper GI Endoscopy Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) 1️⃣ Is Upper GI Endoscopy painful? No, as sedation is administered. You might experience mild pressure, but no pain. 2️⃣ How do I prepare for Upper GI Endoscopy? Avoid food and drink for a minimum of 6–8 hours prior to the procedure. Avoid some medications (as recommended by your doctor). 3️⃣ How long does the procedure last? The endoscopy itself only takes 15–30 minutes, but recovery from sedation can take a couple of hours. 4️⃣ What happens afterwards? You might experience some mild throat soreness for a few hours. You cannot drive after sedation, so make arrangements for someone to drive you home. 5️⃣ When will I receive my results? If a biopsy is performed, results will take several days to a week. Your physician will talk to you about findings after the procedure. Why is Upper GI Endoscopy Necessary? ✔️ Identifies early warning signs of severe diseases (ulcers, cancer, Barrett's esophagus) ✔️ May be able to treat immediately (polyp removal, cessation of bleeding) ✔️ Minimally invasive & fast recovery If you notice any of the above symptoms, don't overlook them!
