Cleansers are an important part of any skincare routine, as they help to get rid of the day’s dirt and grime, and help to support our skin barrier and retain moisture in our skin. Cleansers come in two main types, soap and soap-free, but it is important to know what these mean, and what to look for in a cleanser that will be suitable for you skin. How do I choose the right cleanser? While the answer to this question will be different for everyone depending on your preferences, there are some things to keep in mind that can help you make an informed decision. First, remember that soap tends to have a high pH of around 10, whereas our skin is naturally more acidic, at around pH 4-5. This means that soap is much more likely to irritate your skin than a soap-free product. This is important for everyone to consider, but more so for those with sensitive skin or dry skin conditions, who may be more prone to irritation from soap. Second, remember that not all cleansers are equal. It might seem like they all look the same and function the same, but the reality is that they may contain ingredients that are irritating or just no beneficial for our skin. It might be tempting to go for the nicest looking or cheapest cleanser, but it is worth looking at the ingredients and making sure they are appropriate. This brings us on to the ingredients to avoid. What ingredients should I avoid using on dry skin? When it comes to cleansers, try to avoid soap where you can. After this, the next ingredients to avoid are colour and fragrance, both of which are among the most irritating ingredients found in skincare products, yet are surprisingly hard to avoid in many of today’s products.
