Watching him on his channel now you'd think he's been doing it all of his life - he seems so natural it's hard to imagine he's ever done anything else. But the younger Matthew actually set out on a different path than he is on now, and it took a lot of unhappiness, and even getting fired from a job he had worked hard and long to get, to make him take a huge risk and do something he was passionate about. He lost his job, his pay check and his security, but ultimately found his way. Like most young people, in high school Matt had no idea what he wanted to do with his life, no idea what job or career he might pursue, or what his real passion might be. And so, when his accounting teacher mentioned that he could make a lot of money as an accountant, he figured "Hey, money is good, I like money - Let's Do It!" So, with accounting and money on his mind he worked to get the right high school credits that would get him into the right University so he could get the right degree, become an accountant, and make all that money he was promised and had his eye on. He spent the next five and a half years at that University getting a Masters of Accountancy degree - Yaaay! And, just like he had been told, had planned for and worked for, he got a job right away at a Public Accounting firm making a cool, fresh out of school, $30,000 per year! There was only one problem though, he was totally miserable. But he didn't want to admit that to himself fully, couldn't admit it to himself because he had invested so much time and effort and money into getting that degree. "I hate my job, I am miserable," he thought. So, he convinced himself that the feelings were normal, that being miserable was just part of growing up and getting a job and making good money. He convinced himself that this was what people do, they get a job, they sit in a cubicle, they put their heads down and they just work. Happiness and job satisfaction come later. But one day, everything changed. An administrator called Matt into his office, told him, "thanks, but business is slow so we have to let you go". In minutes that "safe" job he had worked all of those years to get suddenly wasn't so safe. This was not supposed to happen. A bad thing happened and it would change his life forever. He realized that we are all taught to take the safe route when in fact the "safe" route isn't always safe at all. It hit him all at once, if the "safe" path was really a risky path, then what was he risking, by trying to work for himself, to do something he cared about and was excited and passionate about instead? He had to fail and lose in order to learn what he did not in school. He had already discovered YouTube a year earlier and was in love with the whole idea of it, as a fan and a sometimes creator and poster, but nothing serious. But with nothing holding him back now, he decided to go all in, to create a YouTube channel with all the energy and passion he truly felt for it. It was a huge risk, and scary, and there were lots of moments where he doubted himself, wondered it he had made the right decision at all. Would the reward be as big as the risk? He spent the next year with no money and no real sense of direction, full of doubt and fear, BUT, he never gave up, and something began to happen. His videos started to get noticed, from a few hundred views, to a few thousand, to tens of thousands and eventually hundreds of thousands. Soon he was making as much money from his YouTube channel as he had been in his accounting job. It took something bad happening to him - hating his job and getting fired, failure - to force him to do something new, and take a big risk. Now, he realizes that being forced to follow his heart was the best thing that ever happened to him. Sometimes learning the hard way can be the best thing motivation.
