Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia launched ‘massive’ overnight attacks on the country, using over 600 drones and 30 missiles. At least three have been reported killed, including a four year old. According to Russia’s state news agency, Tass, the Russian defence ministry says its armed forces struck Ukrainian energy facilities, and other transport infrastructure used by the military. The attack has resulted in several regions being hit by power cuts in the cold winter weather. Neighboring Poland also scrambled fighter jets to protect its own airspace following the strikes. According to Ukraine’s power operator, Ukrenergo, first broke out in multiple regions due to the ‘massive missile and drone attack’. They also say that “emergency power outages” are in place in several areas, as temperatures plummet. Zelenskyy warned earlier this week that it was Russia’s "nature to make some kind of massive strike on our Christmas, especially on December 23, 24, and 25.” The overnight attacks come just hours after a Russian general, Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov, was killed by a car bomb. Sarvarov was the head of the operational training directorate of the Russian armed forces’ general staff, and he had overseen combat training and readiness for Russia’s armed forces in the war in Ukraine. The attack also follows the latest round of US-led talks in Miami aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, but no breakthrough was made.
