Sr Bernadette lives in community so has a few insights to offer for those finding it difficult being constantly surrounded by others within our homes. #WYDatHome #SandhurstYouth #StrongerYouth #Catholic #MGLsisters #Community #PhysicalDistancing #StressStrategies #CheckYourself #Arise #PalmSunday Strategies for Managing Stress and Conflict - Bernadette Toohey MGL The stress of the crisis we are and how to manage it in looks different for everyone. Here are some strategies if you are finding the changes to your circumstances and the world around you are causing you increased stress within and conflict or tension with those around you: 1. Check Yourself - It can be good to be honest with yourself about how things happening at the moment are affecting you. To simplify the range of emotions, you can choose from one of these four, asking yourself regularly: Am I feeling glad, sad, mad, or anxious? 2. Practice The Examen - St Ignatius' Examination of Consciousness can be a great way of practising gratitude and noticing the harder parts of the day: Ask God for the light of the Holy Spirit Give thanks Review the day Ask for healing and forgiveness Make a resolve in the areas where you need God in the day to come https://www.ignatianspirituality.com/... 3. Attention to Experience Exercise - This exercise prepared by Fr Tony Schick MGL can be a great way to debrief and process experiences that have a lot of emotional content, be they negative or positive. This exercise can be helpful to process an experience that you can't move on from, for example, a conflict situation (or conversely for deriving further gratitude and joy from a positive experience that you wish to re-live!) A pdf version of the Attention to Experience Exercise and further talks on Emotions in the Spiritual Life can be found here: http://mglpriestsandbrothers.org/goin... 4. Shame Awareness - Often the strongest emotions, overreactions and conflict we experience occur when we experience shame. The work of Brene Brown (https://brenebrown.com/) suggests that we can identify experiences that are likely to trigger shame in us by asking the question: I want to be perceived as... (eg: reliable, funny, relatable, honest, holy, respectful etc) And: I don't want to be perceived as... (eg: lazy, ignorant, selfish, boring, insensitive etc) It is when we are perceived as one of these 'unwanted identities' that we often experience shame. This experience can look different for everyone but is the feeling of being overwhelmed and dislodged that can lead us towards undesirable behaviours and thought patterns unless we intervene. Brene Brown suggests the following when we experience shame: Recognise shame (name it) Be Objective (keep things in perspective) Speak it Out (call/speak to someone you trust who can offer you understanding, validation and compassion) Reach Out (become more shame resilient by reaching out to others in shame) These are just some of the ways to process what is happening within you. Using these strategies will help you to bring to Jesus what is happening for you and to receive his love, mercy and compassion. It will also help you to be calm and rational if you need to broach tricky topics and express how you are feeling with those that you live and work with. It can prevent things from boiling over and also can help you to be there for others when they are going through similar emotions and experiences. If you need further help, reach out to your youth minister, diocese, priest, pastoral worker, through online resources like HeadSpace (https://headspace.org.au/) or seek professional assistance (use your GP as your first port of call). Praying for you all and hope that this can be a time of deeper conversion, grace and knowing our need for God in every moment.
