Purchase the game here: https://www.dlsite.com/home/work/=/pr... (base game) https://www.vector.co.jp/soft/win95/g... (Thien-Ron update) https://www.vector.co.jp/soft/win95/g... (Standalone Thien-Ron game) Originally released around November 2007 by Project Atsuki, Axel City has a rather unique style inspired by 1980s Shonen manga, with its overall presentation being one of the most impressive for a doujin game, both back then and even now. The game would receive a spin-off in the form of Thien-Ron: Axel City Gaiden around 2009, which could be combined with base Axel City so you could fight using characters from both games in local multiplayer. A direct sequel, Axel City 2, was released around 2023 for arcades (courtesy of exA-Arcadia), with an updated re-release of that game featuring new characters - subtitled “The Final Storm“ - currently in the works. Because I don’t have $4000 USD laying around to buy both the system and the game (nor do I have any local arcades that have any exA-Arcadia games in general), the first game is as far as we go for now, and overall it’s quite an interesting experience. Surprisingly, there isn’t that much in terms of mechanics. Six normal attack buttons (comprising of varying strengths of punches and kicks), backdashing and dashing for quick horizontal movement, a dash attack (while dashing, 3P/3K), the ability to charge up meter (hold HP+HK) and to taunt your opponent to decrease their meter (4HP+HK). You also quick rise from a knockdown by pressing HP+HK. Meter (the “Axel Gauge”) is primarily used for super attacks, which (depending on the super) could use one or two bars - the latter of which dealing more damage - out of a maximum of three. The game's story (from what I could gather using machine translation, so I apologize if any of this is inaccurate) takes place in the titular city, which was an artificial island created during the Cold War by several major Western corporations (all of them working under a joint venture to help develop and further unify the allied nations which participated in Axel City's development). However, a variety of issues has occurred during the city's development, including conflicts in between these allied nations (specifically between developing nations and developed nations) and a Great Depression damaging the economy. This resulted in unemployment skyrocketing in addition to an influx of refugees arriving in Axel City, and the town would be subsequently known as the world's most famous crime city. Despite this predicament, the city's inhabitants would be united under the art of street fighting - those with power would gain glory and money, and would therefore rule each district. Out of this, several criminal organizations would form, including Boumad, led by D Wun. Prior to the events of this game, Boumad has taken over Axel City's Chinatown district (which would be a bit important later). Anyways, the street fighting eventually evolved into the "Axel Fight", a martial arts tournament in which your chosen character (in the game's Story Mode) participates in. One such participant is Agito, a Japanese gang member who is known to have mastered the "Gyokusaiken Yami" martial art. After being sentenced to death for killing 200 mafia members, he was then freed by a secret public safety organization. From there, Agito learns that his best friend Kenji (who was a former member of the gang Agito was in) has released a drug named MR ("Mad Reverse") into the world and has subsequently taken over Axel City. From there, Agito sets out to join the Axel Fight tournament to investigate the truth. After (presumably) defeating several opponents in the tournament, Agito visits a grave (guessing that it's the grave of her dead sister, Reika). There, he meets Girian, who was following him throughout the first few matches. Girian, working for the United States secret forces, proposes to Agito to partner up with him, of course wanting to fight first to see if he could be trusted. Agito wins, Girian presumably joins him, and then Agito participates (and wins) in more tournament matches, until he enters the final stage of the tournament, located inside a clock tower. There, Agito meets Raihou, who seemingly knows about Kenji, Agito, and Reika (also noting that he played with Kenji back when he was a kid). With him and the other tournament organizers impressed with Agito's results, he then admits that there have been many requests for Agito to be defeated, before sending his henchmen to kill Agito. Reyday, one of the tournament participants Agito previously defeated (and presumably befriends), shows up and helps Agito out. They both chase Raihou, eventually defeating Raihou, his henchmen, and... (continued in pinned comment)
