Cancellation of Caryl Churchill’s lifetime award over her pro-Palestine politics draws condemnations

Leading figures in British theatre have signed an open letter condemning the decision of the jury of the 2022 European Drama prize to cancel playwright Caryl Churchill’s lifetime award over her support for the BDS movement and her play Seven Jewish Children: A Play for Gaza. The letter, signed by Dame Harriet Walter, Liam Cunningham, Mike Leigh, Stephen Daldry, Phyllida Lloyd, Angela Davis and 164 others, accused the jury of "modern-day McCarthyism" and criticised it for "failing to defend artists who speak out in support of human rights". Churchill, 84, is one of the UK’s most influential playwrights, having written more than 30 plays, often centred around the abuse of power.
