On the 16th of December, 1944, Hitler launched his final major offensive of World War 2, Operation Watch on the Rhine. The battle that followed, would come to be known in the west, as the Battle of the Bulge. Just as in 1940, tanks were to smash through Allied lines in the Ardennes forest, and head north to the coast, with the goal of splitting British and American forces in 2, causing their alliance to disintegrate. Hitler could then focus on his real enemy, the Soviet Union. At first, the assault looked promising. The Germans took the allies by surprise, and created a huge bulge in the Allied line, hence the battles name. But by the end of January the Allies blunted the German push, closed up the bulge, and shattered Hitlers hopes of victory. So where did it all go wrong for the Germans? Why did they lose the battle of the bulge?
