The track celebrates and traces the history of reggae music in Aotearoa, New Zealand. It captures the journey from the late 1970’s Jamaican-influenced sounds embraced by Māori and Polynesian communities, the socio-political and racial justice issues it helped address during the 1980’s, through to today’s festival-driven reggae scene, enjoyed by a wide audience. The song features classic reggae elements: a steady “one drop” beat, authentic electric-guitar and piano skanks, a grooving organ bubble, and a street-inspired lead vocal supported by rich and soulful harmonies. Credits: Lyrics, music, production, mixing, mastering, video: Michael Fredrickson Lead vocals: Honey–B–Sweet Backing vocals: Josh, Talisha, Elena Lyrics: We love roots reggae, Aotearoa reggae It’s in our bones, always It’ll never change Take it away Honey Bee Well hello everybody hope you’re doing OK GI’s the name – producer DJ Wise man in appearance from AK But we’re young, from all over and every race Now we try to make best of any genre they play But our favourite groove is Aotearoa reggae It started way back when Uncle Bob still graced Herbs, Dread and the Tribes paved our new way Roots really … was for the hardcore But now outside JA no-one loves reggae more Part fight for justice, part pacific strum It’s now found in Porirua to Remuera And doing quite well, many a Tui Thanks to Tiki, Freddy, and now LAB All 3 of whom are deft performers They take the festivals to every corner Aotearoa reggae This is real reggae music Hip hop and R & B Always reggae music Aotearoa reggae We love reggae music Aotearoa reggae All day reggae music People drive from miles around Just to listen to kiwi roots, didly dub sound But still it’s called lame, oh man what a shame Mururoa, Maoritanga so much was gained.
