Building the world's biggest electric ferry

As the world moves away from fossil fuels, Incat, the Tasmanian shipbuilder, is betting that electric ferries are the future. Hull 096 as it’s currently known, is being built by Incat in Hobart, Tasmania, a long way from its final destination in South America. It will eventually carry passengers across the Río de la Plata, between Argentina’s capital Buenos Aires and Uruguay. The journey across the river is about 30 nautical miles and will take just over an hour. That’s going to require some serious batteries, that are able to keep Hull 096 running for 90 minutes. ABC Climate reporter Jess Davis reports. #ClimateReportingTeam 00:00: The world's biggest electric ferry 2:35: Why Tasmania? 3:56: Hull 096 5:13: The tour 6:12: The battery 7:14: Charging 7:50: Uruguay and Argentina's electricity 8:54: Can the shipping industry decarbonise? 9:40: Shipping industry emissions Subscribe: https://ab.co/3yqPOZ5 Read more here: Welcome to ABC News In-depth, where you'll find our long-form journalism and other videos to help you understand what's going on in the world around you.
