Jason Carter, grandson of late first lady Rosalynn Carter and former President Jimmy Carter, shared some of his family’s “private love stories” Tuesday at a memorial service at Emory University. Remembering his grandmother, who died at 96 in November, he shared many lesser known anecdotes about her: how she handed out pimento cheese sandwiches to other passengers on a domestic flight, practiced Tai Chi with a sword, sent birthday cards to her adult grandkids always with a $20 bill tucked in. “She was so down to earth, ya’ll, it was amazing,” Carter said. But in addition to being a “cool grandma,” Carter detailed her far deeper legacy in the struggle for stronger human rights around the globe and advocacy for issues like mental health, women's empowerment and disease eradication. The former president, who is 99 and in hospice care, was able to attend the service. Other guests included President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and second gentleman Douglas Emhoff, all of the other living former first ladies, the PBS NewsHour’s Judy Woodruff and many others.
