We finished the roof boards on our off grid cabin in northern Ontario - a major milestone. But when we tried to return one week later, winter had frozen the river solid overnight. After weeks of work, we finally completed the roof on our hand-built cabin with a traditional topping out ceremony. The structure is now weatherproof - a huge accomplishment before deep winter arrives. One week later, we drove through the night to install the door and seal the last gable end. The temperature dropped to -12°C as we traveled north. When we arrived, heavy snow had buried the boat launch. We separated the boat from the trailer, dragged it across the snow, and reassembled everything on the road. But by the time we reached the river, we realized the conditions were beyond what we could safely navigate. We called our friend Roger for advice. He suggested we could try pushing through, but we decided to wait and assess the next morning. When we returned at dawn, the river had frozen completely solid overnight. We attempted to break through the ice with a boat paddle, but it was done. Winter had locked us out. This is the reality of off grid living in the boreal forest - nature sets the timeline, not us. The cabin is weatherproof. The river is frozen. And snowmobiles are now our only access until spring.
