2021 is the 75th Anniversary of Operation Crossroads! The world's first nuclear test, codenamed Trinity, was conducted on July 16, 1945. Less than one year later, the world's first true test series was conducted by the United States Navy. The objective of the series, dubbed Operation Crossroads, was to study the effects of a nuclear blast on naval vessels. Purely a weapons effects series, these tests did not advance weapons design. However, Crossroads did provide an early lesson in the possible dangers of radiation. The first test, Able, accidentally sank the operation's unmanned diagnostic ship. The second test, Baker, was detonated directly below the test fleet. Films and photos of Baker are some of the most iconic images of the Atomic Age. A third test, Charlie, would have been performed deep below the surface, but it was cancelled.
