I caught an overnight train from St Petersburg to Minsk. I travelled third class and even though I can't speak much Russian and the other passengers couldn't speak English everyone was really friendly and helpful. The lady who was in charge of my carriage was excellent. I was woken up at night by armed border guards who wanted to see my passport, but they were just doing their job. I arrived in Minsk early in the morning and although it took over an hour to change money, find the toilet and leave my main ruck sack in left luggage the main train station in Minsk was very clean and well maintained. Very clean and well maintained is the best phrase I can use to describe Minsk. The city was rebuilt after World War Two and is well planned with lots of interesting architecture and urban parks. The people in Minsk and Belorussia were really kind and helpful and although most people couldn't speak English they always tried their best to communicate and be helpful. So yes, this city is NOT what you would think it to be like. It's well worth visiting.
