2022 BMW i4 | Review & Road Test

For the latest BMW i4 pricing and information: https://www.kbb.com/bmw/i4/ The i4 is a Grand Coupe that follows in the EV footsteps of BMW’s i8, i3 and iX. Of all of those this sexy sedan with the sloping roofline is my favorite body style. The base model version of the i4 is the eDrive40, which gets decent horsepower (graphic: 335 horsepower) and is a rear-wheel drive configuration. The M50 pushes 536 horsepower around (graphic: 586 lb-ft torque) with all four tires and gets up to 275 miles of range. That is less than the eDrive40 which manages 300 miles. But am I disappointed that I’ve got less range? Nope, not one bit when I’ve got some excitement like that under my right foot to the tune of 0-60 in 3.9 seconds. Power feels quick, zippy, jazzy, immediate, however you want to say it, it’s there. I’m not feeling like I’d like more, even thought this isn’t a shrinking violet of a car, it weighs in at over 5,000 pounds. From the balance of the i4 to the weight distribution to the stability, this car just feels good. I love it when I get into a sporty sedan and everything about it just feels taut and clenched like it’s ready for action. This car feels that way and I’m having a great time driving it. I feel a bit invincible and I think most folks who drive this will have similar feelings. If I had one complaint it would be with the steering, but the lack of much feedback and an artificial feel is a nit pick. The weight is good, especially in Sport mode and there’s no dead spot on center. Let’s talk regenerative braking for a second, shall we? The i4 gets four different settings to customize your braking/regen needs. You can shut the system off completely for a more natural feel. I say more natural, because it’s not 100% natural feeling they are brake-by-wire. But they’re certainly effective and have a nice bite to them. Get into adaptive mode and the regen system works with the navigation system to see when turns or elevation changes are coming and it anticipates the need to engage the brakes. I’ve used it and while I like it, I’m way more into one-pedal driving these days. Driving a sport coupe with one-pedal is a totally different experience especially if you’ve mashed the throttle and are doing some hard braking, but once you get used to it there’s a synchronistic feel you start to get with the car, and I really dig it. It’s like left-foot braking while rally driving and that’s the best kind of driving there is in my opinion. The i4 gets an 83.9 kWh battery that is DC fast charging capable up to 200 kw. At that capacity you’re looking at a 10%-80% charge in 31 minutes. Like Mercedes Benz and Cadillac BMW is throwing in free charging sessions with EVGo. Let’s talk about the interior for a second. The i4’s cockpit is driver focused and friendly, the way a Grand Coupe should be. There’s a massive curved display that orients to the driver and incorporates both driver’s information and entertainment, climate controls and Smart Phone connectivity. I like how seamlessly the gauge cluster, infotainment screen and head up display all work together and are super customizable so you can get different info in different places or you can get it all on everything. As a driver it’s nice to be able to put things where you want them. Some great standard features in the i4 include a power tailgate, keyless entry, moonroof, rain sensing wipers, dual climate control, and adaptive cruise control. Additional driver assists include blind spot detection, lane departure warnings, rear cross traffic alerts and a fatigue and focus alert. The M50 adds 19-inch wheels, M Sport brakes with blue calipers so everyone knows you’re M-ing it, the badging does that, too, but you also get that adaptive M suspension and variable sport steering. for the i4 eDrive40 starts at $55,400. The M50 i4 gets a higher base price of $65,900. Both of those prices do not include the federal $7500 tax credit you could be eligible for. The M50 I tested that comes with special paint, the parking assistance, premium and high performance packages has a retail price of $76,670 and that does include the $995 destination charge. That seems kinda like a bargain. Okay, BMW, I’m still sweating, but it’s not just because of the southern California summer. The i4 M50 lives up to the M badge for sure with its stellar driving dynamics, excellent tech and classic BMW looks.
