In this episode of Finding Hebrews, we move from the end of Hebrews 2 into Hebrews 3:1–6 and press directly into the question of salvation and security. The writer speaks to “holy brothers” who are partners in a heavenly calling and yet warns them about drifting, going backwards, and failing to “hold fast” their confidence. We start by revisiting the argument of chapter 2: Jesus is truly human, our brother, made like us “in every respect.” He shares flesh and blood, faces death, and enters into the fear of death that enslaves humanity. As high priest, He suffers when tempted and is able to help those who are being tempted. From there, we move into Hebrews 3 and the tension it creates with later doctrines of eternal security. The lesson contrasts: Romans 8 (“nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ”) With Hebrews’ language of drifting away, going backwards, and the conditional: “We are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.” Along the way, we examine how the New Testament uses salvation language (saved / being saved / will be saved), how the word “saved” became a fixed theological label after the Reformation, and why the Hebrews writer seems to think in terms of a process you can abandon rather than a completed event you cannot lose. The episode leaves the tension deliberately in place and raises the key question- If the author of Hebrews did not believe in eternal security, what does that mean for how we read his letter as part of the New Testament? 00:00– Recap: Jesus Our Brother, Human “in Every Respect” 01:39– Reading Hebrews 2:14–18 – The Fear of Death and Temptation 03:00– Could Jesus Have Sinned?
