Presented by: Tessa N. Warner, MD; Madeleine Genereux, MD; Amanda B. Price, MD; M. Olivia Titus, MD; Matthew M. Moake, MD, PhD Children frequently present to the Emergency Department (ED) for evaluation of ingested foreign bodies, most commonly coins. While often inconsequential, if lodged in the esophagus coins can cause significant morbidity and warrant urgent removal. This is most commonly performed via direct visualization in the operating room (OR). Esophageal bougienage is an alternative technique that our group has previously shown to be safe and efficacious with reduced length of stay (LOS) and cost. Despite these advantages, this technique remains underutilized. Here, we describe our group’s ongoing experience with esophageal bougienage and to hope encourage providers to consider this efficacious and safe procedure as a chief management strategy for esophageal coins.
