Doing good in a general sense - in the context of walking in the Spirit Good works is the essence of the Christian faith. It does not save, but we are saved unto good works (Titus 2:13-14, Eph 2:10) Christian profession should not be barren or void of good works. We still struggle against remaining sin. The world presence innumerable hindrances.- Heb 3:13, Eph 5:16 2. The good thing that we owe to all men We must do good to all men. Apart from the word of God, we are never equipped to do good (2 Th 3:10) We do good to all men, because all men are created in the image of God Pr 14:12, 31, 19:17, Romans 13:8 - care for the poor. 1 Pe 2:11-12, Mt 5:16 - we have the obligation to do good to all men Romans 1:14 - We must bring the gospel to them. Grace does not make you a debtor to God The gospel is not ours to keep, but ours to give away. To keep it in ourselves is to rob men of what we owe to them. The greatest good that we can do to all men is to preach the gospel to them. 3. We have the particular responsibility to our brethren. Christ loves His church. While have obligation to all men, we have specific and greater obligation to the believers. We have common hope, common Savior and we will share eternity with the saints Mt 25:40 - We have a particular duty to those within the local church. This is part of our mutural care and covenant responsibility. We must keep, preserve and care for one another. Acts 2:44-45 - We must encourage one another to do good works. The church provides innumerable encouragement to do good to God's people. 1 Cor 15:58 - We must always abound in the work of the LORD. Christ alone can wash away our sins, not our good works.
