JUSTIN ZOTTL AMERICAN PRO 3 - In the past few years, I’ve tried to be a voice of reason, safer use, and thoughtfulness when it comes to the pursuit of seemingly impossible and daunting goals. However, this isn’t to say that I’ve always been this way because I used to be one of the most aggressive, irresponsibly focused, and singularly minded people I’ve ever known or interacted with. And the reason that I bring this up is because it’s exactly the reason why Justin and I work so well together and I think I feel such a vast amount of empathy whenever he and I walked into a competition together. - You guys have already heard the story of the jury battle between Justin and Dave Raymond, but I wanted to use this caption as an opportunity to tell the story of Justin and I not only figuring out exactly what he was capable of on the day, but also proving to himself Exactly what kind of competitor he is. - He irritated his L5 vertebrae three weeks out from this competition, and we had to heavily adjust the last bit of trading simply to get him on the platform out of pain and give him the best opportunity to show the result of all the work that he has put in. This sport shows us sometimes though that no matter how well laid our plans are, the universe will punch you in the mouth anyway. - Justin’s back popped on one of his last warm-ups prior to squats and it put him in an extreme amount of pain. The responsible, coaching, focused side of my brain immediately leans towards the responsible choice and decision to live to lift another day and simply chase after a bench PR he had been seeking for so many years. But, the athletes oriented side of my brain that more closely resembles ego felt the fire come from Justin when I looked at him and asked him what he thought we should do or how he felt about it and he answered: “Don’t touch the weight on my bar unless we’re going up”.
