The internet will have you believe that Hot Space is Queen's worst album, and that Cool Cat is one of the worst songs on said album. Does that mean Cool Cat is one of the worst Queen songs ever? The answer is a big fat no. In all fairness, Cool Cat is hardly a Queen song at all. It's essentially a collaboration between Freddie and John. In fact, neither Brian or Roger appear on this song in any form. John plays bass and rhythm guitar, while Freddie plays some electric piano. The original version of Cool Cat was originally planned as closer to the album, but of course, Under Pressure fulfilled that role, despite being an odd inclusion on said album. Cool Cat is as atypical Queen as it gets: chilled, reggae vibes where Freddie's falsetto takes the song to magnificent heights. The more I listened to Cool Cat, the more irresistible the song gets. The only drawback of the song is the production. Come the 80s, Queen were notorious for nailing a song idea and completing it in the quickest way possible. Beneath the tinny production, there is a magnificent song doing its best to emerge. With my remix, I tried to give it a bigger sound. In fact, I wanted it to sound more 80s than the original! I drew inspiration from other 80s songs including Sade's The Sweetest Taboo and Wham!'s Club Tropicana. I also took cues from other John Deacon's Queen songs, including I Want To Break Free and One Year Of Love. In fact, this mix sounds a lot how Cool Cat would have sounded if it was made for the A Kind of Magic album in 1986, four years after it's original release. Anyway, enjoy it. Leave a like if you like.
