Like it was written from the script of Charles Dickens, Shane Kelly OAM was in the pinnacle of his career and the hot favourite to win the Olympic Gold Medal at the Atlanta Olympics. In Bogota Colombia 1995 one year before the Olympic Games he broke the World 1km TT record. He was branded the Minute Man because no one had ever gone so close to breaking the Minute barrier in this race. Smack in the middle of his three consecutive World Titles when he was at his absolute peak was the 96 Olympic Games and he was the World Record holder and the hottest favourite of any gold medal for cycling that year. I was also his only roommate at those Games and then the unthinkable happened. In a split second years of training dissolved into the most dramatic moments of the Atlanta Olympic Games. Still yet to compete, as I waited in our room I was expecting a meltdown on his return. What do I say to him? How do I console him? Should I get another room to give him space? My mind was going a million miles an hour! Yet I didn’t have to. True to Shane’s nature and the gentleman he is, he was the one that gave me space. He didn’t return for 2 whole days after the event and in that time he will be remembered for how incredibly well he handled the monumental disaster with the media. And when he finally did return and I was expecting a mountain of expletives as he walked in, his first and exact words to me were ‘Brett, I stuffed up’! He took full accountability of everything that happened that day. Being the best in the World at what you do is one thing but being the best you can be when your at your lowest point is the sign of the Greatest Champions of all.
