Opened in 1957, originally as a jazz club before it became the heart of Liverpool’s Rock and Roll scene throughout the late 1950’s to early 1960’s and is most fondly linked to the Beatles and the Merseybeat style that also saw the emergence of Gerry and The Pacemakers, the Searchers and Cilla Black. The venue was originally a fruit warehouse, with the cellar having been used as a WWII air raid shelter. In warm weather the heat from dancers in the packed venue would cause the bricks to ‘sweat’ the scent from the stored fruit creating the colloquially named ‘Cavern Perfume’ on revellers. Despite the success of the skiffle groups, John Lennon’s first band – the Quarrymen – were booked and after an argument about the set list then went on to perform Elvis’ Do not Be Cruel.
