This PowerPoint, with activities, and lesson plans are available @: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/S... This lesson teaches students about the influences of George Washington and John Adams foreign policies, and the challenges both the president and the nation faced in the history of the early republic. In part I we covered the early presidency of George Washington and the economic policies of Alexander Hamilton, so check those out if you haven’t already. The student will be able to identify the major events and key figures of this monumental time in U.S. history. Content covered in this lesson includes: • Review: Treaty of Paris, Washington’s Inauguration, Hamilton vs. Jefferson, Hamilton’s economic policies (National Bank, tariffs), and the Whiskey Rebellion • Westward Expansion and tension with the Native populations of the Northwest Territories • Britain and Spain’s role in the Northwest Native War’s – St. Clair’s Defeat & the Battle of Fallen Timbers • Washington’s response to these events (General Anthony Wayne, the Treaty of Greenville) • Impact of the French Revolution on American politics • Choosing sides: Federalists vs. Democratic-Republicans • British impressment vs. French recruitment • The Jay Treaty • The Pinckney Treaty • Washington’s Farewell Address – warnings: foreign alliances, political parties • Peaceful transfer of power • Two-term precedent (FDR, 22nd Amendment) • Washington returns to Mount Vernon (death, fleeing his slaves, Father of the Country, his service) • The rise of political parties / factions • Federalists vs. Democratic-Republican core beliefs • The Election of 1796 • Quasi-War with France • XYZ Affair • Alien & Sedition Acts Like most of the videos on Mr. Raymond’s Social Studies Academy’s lessons, this video ends with a review “quiz.” Remember that the PowerPoint in this video as well as a variety of lesson plans, worksheets, smartboard files and activities, are available at Teachers Pay Teachers. As a social studies teacher, I have often looked for good YouTube video clips to show my students. I hope these videos will serve as a supplement to lessons for civics teachers, US history teachers, US government teachers and their students. I have also thought that these videos could help those who are going to take the naturalization test to become US Citizens.
