Dylan has been working with the Harpur lab studying the genetic diversity of honey bee populations in the United States. As they've studied the samples being sent in from beekeepers they have identified genomic data that gives us some important and powerful insights into honey bee genetics, diversity, and adaptation. In this presentation Dylan will share their findings and provide us with updates on what these genomic indicators mean for beekeeping. Dylan Ryals is a life-long beekeeper with experience working on commercial pollination and queen-rearing apiaries. He is currently a PhD student under Dr. Brock Harpur at Purdue University where he studies honey bee genetics and breeding. He will present ongoing research uncovering bee ancestry, genetic diversity, and population structure across the United States with special attention to feral and non-commercial populations. After his PhD, Dylan plans to work in the queen breeding industry to help improve the health and productivity of our favorite social insect.
