Back to 1979 and an EMI Various Artist Compilation issued in Australia called 'Countdown Chartbusters Vol 1'. As it turned out there was no Vol 2, but this first quarter release of '79 capitalised on the huge success that the National Broadcaster's Sunday night music program 'Countdown' was and featured 17 from late 1978 and the first part of the following year. Racey burst onto the scene with 'Lay Your Love On Me' which was the #1 best seller for 1979 here in Australia. The British act scored 4 hits in their homeland and this was their first. 'Lay Your Love On Me' was a Top 3 in their homeland, but topped the charts here for a whopping 8 weeks and spending more than 6 months in the Top 50. A promotional visit to our shores helped to not only push this song but the next to be released 'Some Girls' which would also top the charts. Gonzalez were also a British act and their peak came in 1979 with 'Haven't Stopped Dancing Yet' which performed well in the UK (#15) and a minor success in America and Australia - reaching #26 and #30 respectively. As disco was reaching its saturation point by this final year of the 1970's. songs like 'Haven't Stopped Dancing Yet' was perfect fodder for radio and dance floors. Despite recording for a decade, this was the only hit for Gonzalez. Smokie were mainstays on the charts for the second half of the decade, and although their run of hits was prolific - 'Mexican Girl' was indicative that their popularity was waning just a little - reaching #19 in both Britain and Australia. After huge success with 'Living Next Door To Alice'. 'Needles & Pins' 'Lay Back In The Arms Of Someone' and 'Oh Carol' among others, their 1979 hit 'Do To Me' was their last major hit here - although more singles were issued that year. 'Mexican Girl' was a sweet and evocative recording. Finally in this quarter of tracks re-creating the compilation 'Countdown Chartbusters' in 1979 is the wonderful 'Diamonds' by Chris Rea. This thumper of a song was from his sophomore LP 'Deltics' and just missed the Top 40 in both England and America (#44) after Chris had achieved a major hit the year before with the beautiful 'Fool, If You Think It's Over'. Here in Australia, 'Diamonds' had been a Top 15 hit nationally and again it was helped by a promotional visit by the singer. I've re-striped the audio for this performance clip of Mr Rea and his treasure of a hit single. Tomorrow in the second instalment of this EMI compile will feature four more classic hits - including a Grammy nominated signature hit by one of the best female vocalists of all time; a much loved duet, and a track with a very long title by another 1970's mainstay recording artist.
