It was developed as part of the Western Ghats development project, initiated under the prime ministership of Indira Gandhi during 1977. The project in Sugandhagiri later became a comprehensive cardamom project. The project also aims at the rehabilitation of the tribal population in the area and there are about 260 families which are living in an area of 3500 acres.
