Ten F-35A Lightning IIs of the 495th Fighter Squadron at RAF Lakenheath are on night ops and the departures are stunning in the darkness. Not only enjoy the illuminations of the green strips but enjoy the Pratt & Whitney F135 engines which produce 43,000lbs of thrust with afterburner. Oh and afterburners at night are spectacular. 495th FS 'VALKYRIES' The 495th Fighter Squadron (495th FS), nicknamed the Valkyries, is part of the 48th Fighter Wing at RAF Lakenheath, UK. Having been reactivated on 1 October 2021, it became the first overseas United States Air Force squadron to operate the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II on the 15th December 2021. They are the newest on the block here at RAF Lakenheath. The unit had previously operated the General Dynamics F-111F Aardvark at RAF Lakenheath between 1977 and 1991. They disbanded on the 13th December 1991 and then 30 years later (2021) they came back with F-35As and performing some of the finest pilot skills ever seen by the TCS.
