SOUNDBITE (Korean) Hwang Dok Rin, retired hunter and farmer, "Now that I'm more than 70 years old, I can't go into the mountains any more. When I was young, I spent around 30 years going hunting with Pungsan dogs. The Pungsan is brave and clever, and very obedient. In the mountains, if the dog comes across a wild boar, it will trap it, even bite its legs until its master arrives. And if there is a whole group of wild boar, the dog will run around to protect its master and attack the boars. If I'm with a Pungsan dog, I feel safe and sure that hunting will go well, really, If I've got my Pungsan dog with me, everything will be OK." SOUNDBITE (Korean) Kim Chun Bom, local doctor and hunter "These horses are bred in my house, and mainly in the winter time we use them with carts to bring us hunters to the mountains and also bring back the boars that we hunt. All the mountains around here are our hunting grounds. Last year was really good for hunting. The biggest boar we got was about 150 kilograms, others 100 kilos, 70 kilos, 50 kilos, and 30 kilos, altogether we got 20 to 30 of them. Now, you see, Spring is not hunting season. Now the boars are deep in the mountains and it is difficult to catch them. So now we hunters are concentrating mainly on breeding Pungsan dogs. We train the dogs well in preparation for the next winter's hunting." 21. Various of Kim Chun Bom with his dog Pocho (means "Guard" in English) 22. Various of Kim Chun Bom in his home with wife, daughters, and grandson 23. SOUNDBITE (Korean) Ri Mi Ran, wife of Kim Chun Bom "We've called our Pungsan dog "Guard". Guard is very loyal to us and also very clever. One time a woman living next-door came round to talk to me, she was talking loudly, and touched me, and then Guard got up suddenly and jumped at the woman. Both of us were really surprised. But that's what Pungsan dogs are like, they're really loyal and really good guard dogs." Associated Press – AP clients only Pyongyang, North Korea, 19 May 2019 25.
