One million Soviet citizens served the Nazi occupants. They all had different reasons: fear, greed, ideology . Many became involved in Nazi crimes. The most notorious of them was General Vlasov. Hero of Moscow defense, in 1942 he was surrounded and captured. Then, he defected to Nazi Germany and created the Russian Liberation Army. The Germans didn’t trust the Vlasovites, and the Red Army wouldn’t take them as prisoners. But Vlasov did not betray his soldiers. He refused to flee to the West and was captured by the Soviet forces. 30% of Russian immigrants, who were fit for military service, swore their allegiance to Adolf Hitler. Others – either refused, or joined the Resistance movement. Despite the threats from the Germans, General Denikin refused to collaborate. But his former lieutenants did defect. “I would join the devil if he fought Bolsheviks!” – said Cossack chief Shkuro once. The Cossack collaborators were extradited to the USSR by the Western allies.
