The pure and noble purpose of religion is nothing other than the transcendence of the self, the ego, the nafs, for only through liberation from ego-based consciousness can a human being ever attain to truth, success, joy and happiness. Religion and spirituality are the training and the education, and life is the test. The answer is and has always been, as taught by all of the Messengers and Prophets of God, surrender, humility, sincerity and righteousness. True piety and spirituality necessitate jihad an-nafs, the sacred and holy struggle against the self, for only we must recognize and realize that unless we accept that our real enemy is within, we are doomed, and the ego will destroy our lives, it will cost us everything. The greatest danger comes from the enemy we do not know and see, and our greatest enemy hides within. Not facing the self precludes the possibility of developing consciousness and taqwa, and keeps a human being condemned to the lower state of unconsciousness and ignorance known as jahiliyya. Yet by learning to awaken beyond and transcend the self, happiness and success are possible, not only in this life, but eternally.
