This home is located in a particularly unforgiving environment in Westerville (https://www.gutterguardsdirect.com/lo..., a suburb of Columbus, Ohio. With lots of white pines and conifer trees lining both sides of the house, and mature deciduous trees filling in the gaps, the undersized 5" gutters had met its match. Score one point for the trees and zero for the gutters. Several gutters had pulled away due to the heavy weight of leaves, debris and water collecting in the gutters over the years. Downspouts were draining water too close to the house. This was causing damage to the wood siding and allowing water to pool along the foundation walls. The homeowners live in the Canton/Akron area (https://www.gutterguardsdirect.com/lo..., and mostly use it as a satellite office for their employees. Visiting the property infrequently, it was especially important that the gutter and water problems were fixed and they received a recommendation for a gutter cover that would actually shed the leaves and pine needles while taking in the water off the roof. It was paramount to the homeowners that they would be able to remove this seasonal chore from their to-do list for good. Picking the correct gutter guard is the difference between success and failure. Maybe there's a chance to experience a little grey in there, but the tougher your environment, the more critical it is to figure out what's the best gutter guard for your home. It's not an easy pursuit because a lot of gutter companies claim that they have the "best gutter guards." Best is a relative term and bandied about as if it's set in stone. The truth is, most gutter guards would fail in this environment, including many micro mesh gutter guards, due to the way they're designed to install within the gutter and the porosity of there screens. This is true because most gutter guards are designed to sit relatively flat in the gutters. This home has so many pine trees that drop needles onto the roof and into the gutters every day, a gutter cover that sits flat inside the gutter would simply become a shelf and would have to be maintained on a regular basis. More and more "micro mesh" gutter guards don't use screens that are technically micro in size. Most manufacturers have moved away from tightly woven screens to relatively porous screens. Porous screens, including one version that we sell, allow skinny pine needles and other small debris into the gutters.
