(13 Aug 2000) Indonesian/Nat XFA The atmosphere remains tense in the eastern Indonesian town of Ambon where sectarian violence killed three people on Friday. People are starting to flee the town and the United Nations has warned that around 20,000 people are now internally displaced and in need of aid. All the victims on Friday were Muslims who were planning to attack a Christian area after they heard reports that a Muslim woman had been abducted from an Ambon neighbourhood. It's not clear whether anyone on the Christian side was killed or injured. Witnesses said the capital of Maluku province was still tense at dusk with both Muslim and Christian mobs milling in the streets. Maluku and neighbouring North Maluku provinces have been plagued by sectarian violence which has claimed nearly 4,000 lives since January 1999. Some of those fleeing have accused the mostly Muslim Indonesian soldiers sent to restore peace of attacking them. Despite being sent to restore order in the Molucca islands some soldiers are fighting alongside militant Muslims against the Christians they are supposed to be protecting. SOUNDBITE: (Bahasa Indonesian) "Eight trucks of TNI came and attacked our village. They were shooting and chasing us, so we ran and ran to the farthest mountain we could get to. We didn't have any food. We survived solely by drinking natural water. We will never trust TNI again ever." SUPER CAPTION: Marlin, Ambonese refugee The UN says there are now thousands of people fleeing the violence who need aid. SOUNDBITE: (English) "There are clear humanitarian needs of quite some proportion. We have what is estimated to be 200,000 internally displaced persons and in addition several hundred other vulnerable people who have not been displaced. Most of them or many of them lack basic services with regard to food, health, water and sanitation for example." SUPER CAPTION: Svante Skoog, UN Coordinator in Ambon The United Nations has said it is ready to play a role in trying to resolve the sectarian conflict in the Moluccan Islands, where the fighting has killed about 4,000 people.
