In this video, we break down how to solve three electrode potential style calculation questions. We’ll go step-by-step through each calculation, explaining how to use standard electrode potentials and construct ionic equations from given data for an electrochemical cell. Question 1: We’ll start with a classic question that requires us to use electrode potential data to determine oxidation and reduction processes and look at why acidic conditions (H+(aq)) ions are sometimes needed for a given reaction. Question 2: Next, we use standard electrode potentials to calculate the emf of a cell (Ecell) and consider the processes occurring at the cathode and anode. Question 3: Finally, we’ll apply our understanding of electrode potentials and electrochemistry to a ‘real world’ problem and the use of zinc anodes to prevent the corrosion.
