Welcome to the first video in this new Top 10 Videos series. During this series I will be showing my Favourite / Best videos of various classes of rolling stock. And of course I had to start with my personal favourite class of train. The 80 Class DEMU's / Thumpers The 80 Class were the trains that started my love for the railway back in 1997/98 and I remember it was hearing the beautiful 4SRKT engine sound and seeing the lovely sight of the class thumping along the Portadown line in the Adelaide area that got me hooked into the railway and since then the 80 Class have always felt special to me and they always will be. There were 22 sets in the 80 Class fleet and they were built by BREL in England. The units were delivered in 2 batches. The 1st batch entered service in 1974/75 The 2nd batch entered service in 1977/78 Each vehicle in the fleet were numbered individually, with power car numbers running from 67 to 69, and 81 to 99. The Intermediate Trailers were numbered 761 to 780 and the Driving Trailers were numbered 731 to 756 however when Translink took over the running of Northern Ireland Railways in 1997 they added 8 onto the numbers of the stock. The 80 Class have had a busy working life They have worked everything from Normal NIR services & Enterprise services to Football specials , GAA specials , Railtours & Even the peace trains between Belfast & Dublin these trains even survived several hijackings & bombings during the Troubles. 3 80 Class sets went on loan to Irish Rail between October 1987 & November 1990. The 80 Class proved themselves to be very reliable trains and have give many years of fantastic service. Sadly a majority of the 80 Class were withdrawn between 2004 & 2006 when the 23 3000 Class DMU's entered service to replaced them. In 2006 Power car 97 was modified for use as a sandite vehicle it ran under it's own power with another power car until October 2009 when 97 suffered a major engine failure after that the sandite set ran in a 4 car formation consisting of PC - DT - 97 - PC. Then in 2008 despite that most of the fleet had been withdrawn and scrapped NIR decided to retain 12 80 Class vehicles and sent them for refurbishment for use as 4 car sets. In the end there were never more than 2 refurbished sets running at once. Here is a list of vehicles that were refurbished Power cars 69 , 82 , 89 , 90 , 93 & 94 Driving Trailers 747 , 749 , 752 , 754 Refurbishment of Driving trailers 733 & 738 was never completed The refurbished sets were specifically used on the Larne line and they were in passenger service between 2009 & 2011. In 2011 the first of the 20 4000 Class DMU's entered service they would replace all remaining 80 Class & 450 Class units. On the 25th September 2011 the MRSI ran a 80 Class farewell tour from Belfast to Dundalk , Coleraine , Larne & Bangor. The set used was 90 - 749 - 752 - 94 The final 80 Class set was withdrawn from passenger service on the 26th September 2011 after 37 of service. The final train was the 06:25 Belfast Central to Whitehead Service & The 07:30 from Whitehead to Central. But the 80 Class would not give up quietly The 80 Class continued to be used as the sandite train up until November 2017 when the set was withdrawn and replaced by NIR's New MPV. In total the 80 class give 43 years of fantastic service to Northern Ireland Railways.
