Scorpions are arachnids found all over the world with over 2,000 different species. They’ve got eight legs, a tail with a sack & a stinger at the end. They’re incredibly adaptable often living in harsh climates. When food is scarce, they have the unique ability to slow their metabolism & live off as little as one insect per year. Scorpions tend to stay away from us but they also love the dark spaces that houses & old buildings provide. They use their pinchers to grab hold of their food before using their stinger. 6: The Striped Bark Scorpion The striped bark scorpion is one of the most commonly encountered scorpions in America coming in at number six. Every year thousands are stung by this critter found in the South western parts of America & Northern Mexico. By day, they hide under rocks, plants, or in the cracks of buildings. At night, they surface in search of food. Their pale yellow colour with black stripes down the side helps them blend into the desert environment & they can grow from three to four inches in length. Their diet consists of insects, smaller arachnids & spiders. Where are they located? Nocturnal creatures, they’re active at night, but rest during the day. In the wild, they can often be found hiding under rocks, within plants & under bits of bark. With their quick reproductive rate scorpions can easily turn into a problem in the home. Needing only the tiniest of spaces to enter your home, they can hide in attics, basements, shoes, clothes, & other dim areas. Some species are known to enjoy spending time upside down, & can be found on the underside of your table. Woodpiles are also great place to hang out, so always double check before grabbing wood! Just saying. Number Four: The Brazilian Yellow Scorpion The Brazilian yellow scorpion lives in Brazil's tropical habitats it prefers to keep its distance from people, but can also be found in cities because its food is attracted to the garbage & vegetation. When fully grown, the Brazilian yellow scorpion is almost 3 inches long, normally a yellow-brown colour with yellow limbs. The Brazilian yellow scorpion's stinger can deliver some long-lasting effects. 3: The Black Fat-tailed Scorpion The black fat-tailed scorpion is number three on our list. The black fat-tailed scorpion prefers warm & dry areas & is often found on the outskirts of deserts in the Middle East & North & West Africa. They're black or brown in color, have a hefty build, & can grow up to 3.5 inches in length. The black fat-tailed scorpion eats lizards, insects, spiders, scorpions, & even small mammals such as mice. The black fat tailed’s scorpion, is different from other scorpions. 2: The Indian Red Scorpion The Indian red scorpion has a sting that's sure to keep any predator away. Found in India & parts of Pakistan, Nepal, & Sri Lanka, this arachnid prefers a humid subtropical or tropical climate. It’s found in populated areas & often finds its way into houses. Generally, it grows to between 2 to 3.5 inches long. Its colors vary slightly, but they’re usually a dark orange, a dull or a bright red-brown with grey ridges. 1: The Arizona Bark Scorpion Number one on our list is the Arizona bark scorpion, which has the worst scorpion stinger out of any scorpion on the planet. Common to South west America & Northwest Mexico, the Arizona bark scorpion is light brown & measures anywhere between 2.5 & 3.5 inches. Feeding on small insects like cockroaches, beetles, crickets & the occasional scorpion or two. Hiding during the day in dark damp places to avoid the intense desert sun they enter your home. The Arizona bark scorpion accounts affects thousands of people in the US every year & around 100,000 people in Mexico.
