Penny Black - $3000 In our list of most valuable stamps penny black is at number ten. The Penny Black was the very first stamp with an adhesive backing, to the idea of Rowland Hill. He is seen as the father of the stamps. The stamp was issued in England in 1840. However, the seal was retracted a year later because the stamp was difficult to spot on the black background. The stamp was replaced by Penny Red. This stamp with a picture of Queen Victoria would be worth $3000 today. 9. Basel Dove - $20,000 The Basel Dove is a stamp issued in Basel, Switzerland in the year 1845. It was the very first three-color stamp in the world. On the stamp a white pigeon is shown with a letter in his mouth. A total of around 42,000 copies were issued and anyone who could still have one of them could handle it better. Today, the Basel Dove is worth about $20,000 8. Tyrian Plum - $160,000 The Tyrian Plum profile which Edward VII pictured is one of the rarest stamps in Britain. Whoever has this stamp from 1910 is very lucky because most are destroyed after the unexpected death of the king. 24 million of the stamps were printed, but it was expected to distribute to the old stamps on goods. When Edward VII deceased too, it was decided to destroy most of the stamps. 7. Canada 12-Pence Black - $500,000 This stamp is also known as Canada's black ruler. It was published in 1851 and is today one of the most rare postage stamps. The photo of Queen Victoria is printed on the stamp, based on Alfred Edward Chalon's portrait. Even though no less than 50,000 stamps were printed, only a small number of them were sold. Six years later, the unsold stamps were destroyed. Apparently, only one hundred of these stamps would exist. It is estimated that this stamp can generate about$ 500,000! 6. The Whole Country is Red - $445,000 This Chinese stamp was issued in 1968, during the Chinese Revolution. It has become especially known because of the mistake it caused. On the image we see a map showing the expansion of Chinese communism with an image of a worker, a farmer and a soldier. The whole map of China was red-pointed except Taiwan, which was under Chinese rule, was printed in white. The mistake was spotted in the afternoon of the first edition day and the stamps were immediately withdrawn. Nevertheless, a number of copies have been added to collectors who can now say they have one of the world's rare stamps. Auction has paid more than $400,000 for this stamp. 5. Inverted Jenny - $1,175,000 This stamp is also known as Curtiss Jenny headstand and it's a printing mistake that has made it one of the most expensive postage stamps ever. The stamp was first published on May 10, 1918, and has an image of a Curtiss JN-4 aircraft that is upside down. Apparently, only one hundred of these stamps would exist. The rest was destroyed. Such a copy was sold through an auction in 2007 for more than $ 1,175,000. 4. The Hawaiian Missionaries - $2,240,000 This stamp, issued by Hawaii in 1851 is the rarest ever. The stamps had three different values and were known as "the missionaries" because the stamp was often used on the post between missionaries. All stamps were printed on low quality blue paper. The stamps with a value of 2 cents are the rarest as only fifteen of them have remained. 3. Treskilling Yellow - $2,300,000 Treskilling Yellow was released in 1855.. In 1996 it was sold for no less than 2.3 million dollars. In 2010, the same stamp was resold for an unknown price. There is only one copy of this stamp that has become so expensive due to a printing error. The stamps were printed with a blue green background but about eight copies came with a yellow background from the printer. Mauritius ‘Post Office’ - $4,000,000 These stamps were issued in 1847 when Mauritius was another British colony. There were stamps of two values. One had an orange-reddish color and the other had a dark blue background. Picture of Queen Victoria was printed on the stamps, with the words 'Post office'. Some claim that the first version was a wrong print, but it did not turn out to be the case. These are estimated at a value of 4 million dollars. 1. British Guiana 1c Magenta - $9,500,000 The British Guiana 1c Magenta is a stamp that brought up $ 9.5 million during an auction in 2014. This makes it the most expensive and rare stamp in the world. The stamp is in the form of an octagon and was printed in limited edition in 1856. The picture of sailing ship with the slogan 'Damus Petimus Que Vicissim' (We give and expect something back) was printed on the stamp. The only copy was discovered by the Scottish boy Louis Vernon between his uncle's letters.
