The Fiero was the first two seater Pontiac since the 1926 to 1938 coupes and the first mass produced mid-engine sports car by a US manufacturer. When the Fiero was introduced in 1984 it played a major role in building the "excitement" image for the Pontiac Motor Division. The word Fiero means "Very Proud" in Italian and "Wild", "Fierce", or "Ferocious" in Spanish. Alternative names considered for the new car were: Sprint, P3000, Pegasus, Sunbird and Firebird XP. Available engines were the I4 2.5L and the V6 2.8L. A total of 370,168 Pontiac Fieros were produce over the relatively short production run of just 5 years.
