Think you’ve seen all that Singapore’s museums have to offer? Think again. Less than 10% of Singapore’s National Collection of art and artefacts – which numbers over 250,000 – are actually on display at a time. The rest are kept under 24-hour guard in a deceptively ordinary looking six-storey facility in Jurong. At the Heritage Conservation Centre, precious artefacts belonging to 11 of Singapore’s museums and heritage institutions are stored, conserved and readied for show. We gain access to this high-security building and peek into its vaults, where some surprising finds await. Meet the people who work behind the scenes and find out what porcupine quills, termite poop and a blowtorch have to do with putting on a museum exhibition. 0:00 Introduction 1:33 Inside Singapore's Heritage Conservation Centre 4:35 Why Heritage Conservation Centre was built 5:35 The journey of a museum artefact 8:22 How to conserve a museum artefact 10:33 What does it take to be a conservator? 16:00 Fumigating artefacts to remove pests 17:13 Museum installation: work of a mount-maker =========== About On The Red Dot: CNA's weekly programme documents the stories of ordinary Singaporeans and celebrates their resilience, identity and sense of belonging. =========== On The Red Dot playlist: • On The Red Dot | Full Episodes #CNAInsider #OnTheRedDot #Singapore #Museum #Conservator For more, SUBSCRIBE to CNA INSIDER https://cna.asia/insideryoutubesub Follow CNA INSIDER on: Instagram: / cnainsider Facebook: / cnainsider Website: https://cna.asia/cnainsider
