월인석보 권11·12, 권17·18 조선 1459년 종이에 목판 인쇄 보물 제935호 석가모니 일대기와 설법을 한글로 편찬한 최초의 책 『월인석보』는 1447년 완성된 『석보상절』과 세종이 1447년 무렵에 노래 형식으로 지은 『월인천강지곡』을 세조의 명으로 합치고 수정하여 간행되었습니다. 구성은 『월인천강지곡』 구절을 먼저 적고, 『석보상절』 구절로 이를 해설하고, 다음 작은 글씨로 보충 설명을 넣는 방식으로 되어 있습니다. 한글과 한자 서체의 슬기로운 배치 『월인석보』는 한자와 순우리말, 한자음을 함께 배치해야하는 어려운 과제를 슬기롭게 해결한 책입니다. 본문은 굵은 한자와 한글, 한자음에 해당하는 가는 한글 서체를 썼고, 설명 부분은 동일한 크기의 가는 한글과 한자 서체를 한 칸에 두 줄씩 배치했습니다. 서체 굵기와 크기, 배치 방식을 다르게 하여 여러 서체를 조화롭게 안배한 구성력과 디자인 능력이 돋보입니다. Episodes from the Life of Shakyamuni Buddha as Reflections of the Moon, Vols. 11 and 12, Vols. 17 and 18 Joseon dynasty, 1459 Woodblock print on paper Treasure No. 935 Shakyamuni’s Biography and Sermons Published in Hangeul Under orders from King Sejo (r. 1455-1468), two pioneering publications that drew upon the invention of Hangeul were combined with revisions and explanations under the title of Worin seokbo: Seokbo sangjeol (Episodes from the Life of Shakyamuni Buddha), written by Sejo himself in 1447; and Worin cheongangjigok (Songs of the Moon’s Reflection on a Thousand Rivers), an epic hymn written by his father, King Sejong, around 1447 as an appendum to Seokbo sangjeol. Insightful Layout of Korean and Chinese Scripts This book, Worin seokbo in Korean title, is ingeniously laid out with Sino-Korean, vernacular Korean, and Korean transliteration of Sino-Korean all effectively fulfilling their respective functions. The main text is written in large, bold Chinese and Korean fonts, while the Korean transliteration of Sino-Korean and the explanations are presented in double lines in small, thin fonts.
